What is acne? Acne is a condition that occurs when a person has too much sebum, oil, or sebum-producing cells, or more often, the absence of the sebum producing cells. There are two types of acne: Acne in adults Acne in children Acne occurs when the sebum production is low or is not adequate. In adults, it is characterized by white patches that develop on the face, neck, back, chest, and arms. In children, it is often accompanied by the appearance of acne scarring. Acne is very common among women. There are several types of acne. The two most common are juvenile acne and adult acne. Juvenile acne, also called juvenile papules and pustules, are caused by the immune system's attack on the follicle. In adults, acne occurs because of the inflammatory response to a break in the skin or irritation that results in pimples. Adult acne is caused by the immune system. Acne is a chronic disease, affecting the skin for a long time. In adult acne, the lesions may appear on the face, back, arms and legs, and may have a variety of other signs and symptoms.
